The effects of chrysin against the damage of subchronic formaldehyde toxicity on the liver rats

In this study, the adverse effects of intraperitoneally (i.p) administered formaldehyde (FA) on the liver of rats were investigated. In addition, the possible protective effects of chrysin against the formaldehyde exposure were also evaluated.For this purpose, 42 male Wistar albino rats were divided into 6 groups. Group I, was used as control, animals in Group II (dosage=FA-0,1) exposed to formaldehyde, 3 days a week for 60 days at 0.1 mg / kg intraperitoneally. Group III (FA-1) rats administered formaldehyde at a dose of 1mg/kg, 3 days a week for 60 days intraperitoneally Chrysin was given orally 3 times a week for 60 days at a dose of 50 mg / kg to rats in group IV. Chrysin was applied together with the formaldehyde to rats in group V. While Chrysin was applied 50 mg / kg orally for 3 days a week for 60 days, formaldehyde was adminstered 3 times a week during for 60 days at a dose of 0.1 mg / kg intraperitoneally. Chrysin was started 1 day in advance to application. Rats in group VI administered formaldehyde in conjunction with the chrysin. Chrysin was applied 50 mg / kg 3 days a week for 60 days orally and formaldehyde administered at a dose of 1 mg / kg during the 3 days per week for 60 days intraperitoneally. Chrysin was initiated 1 day in advance to application. The animals were decapitated at the end of the experiment. Liver tissues were taken for biochemical and histological evaluations.Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and total protein were analyzed from a part of liver tissues of rats. It was observed that parametres showing the oxidative damage had significant increasing the level of TBARS, GSH, CAT and significant decreasing of SOD level in only formaldehyde-exposed rats liver tissues. On the analyses of groups that chrysin was applied with formaldehyde changes in favor of the control group observed on TBARS, GSH, SOD ve CAT levels. Histological sections of liver tissue examined was observed seen in apoptotic cells, changes in hepatocytes, an increase in the number of Kupffer cells and histopathological damage. In the groups treated formaldehyde with chrysin, showed that suppressed apoptosis in liver tissue sections, to be reduction in the number of Kupffer cells and improvement in histopathological changes.As a result, this can be expressed that serious damage occurs to the liver due to exposure to formaldehyde, and showed protective effects of chrysin against damage.
