Reflections of Impressionism in Ravel's piano music: Musicality and expression

This study aims to examine the artistic life and musical style of Maurice Ravel, one of the most significant representatives of early 20th-century French music, within the framework of Impressionism, in order to highlight the composer's unique artistic identity. The balance observed in Ravel's works between adherence to classical forms and the innovative harmonic language, atmospheric qualities, and coloristic approach brought by Impressionism constitutes the central problem of the research. In this regard, both Ravel's life and artistic development, as well as the cultural and aesthetic influences reflected in his works, are evaluated from a multidimensional perspective. Another focal point of the study is the analysis of Ravel's selected piano composition, "Sonatine", in terms of form, atmosphere, and musical characteristics. Thus, the study seeks to present Ravel not only as an Impressionist composer, but also as an artist who, while rooted in classical tradition, drew inspiration from diverse cultures to create new and original expressions. The research first addresses the emergence of Impressionism and its reflections in various art forms (painting, literature, and music), defining the aesthetic and technical components of the movement. Beginning with Claude Monet's Impression: Sunrise, the atmosphere created by this aesthetic approach is discussed, along with how it was transformed into music by composers such as Debussy and Ravel. Just as it began in painting, Impressionism also strongly influenced music and became deeply embedded in compositions. The use of modes, flexible rhythmic structures, colorful timbral explorations, and the concern for atmospheric expression in Impressionist music were viewed as a reaction against the intense emotionality of the Romantic era. Ravel's position within this movement is evaluated through his similarities and differences with Debussy, with emphasis on his attachment to classical forms and his meticulous personality as defining elements of his style. The study adopts a literature review method, making use of the works of Sérullaz (1983), Kelly (2001), Orenstein (1991), Aydınoğlu (2010), Tulga (2009), among others. In addition, Ravel's selected piano work Sonatine is analyzed in terms of form, harmony, and style. Previous studies have provided significant insights into Ravel's orchestration techniques, his comparative style with Debussy, the intricacies of his piano writing, and the Impressionist features in his works. This thesis, however, expands upon these contributions by offering a multidimensional evaluation of Ravel's musical style, with particular focus on a detailed analysis of Sonatine. Within the scope of the thesis, Ravel's artistic life is considered across his early, mature, and late periods. His early period reflects the influence of his Basque mother's folk songs and the artistic environment of Paris; his mature period demonstrates his mastery of orchestration and innovations in piano writing; and his late period shows the impact of war and illness on his compositions. Furthermore, Ravel's place within the avant-garde group Les Apaches is examined in terms of his relationships with contemporary artistic circles and the contribution of this group to his artistic vision. Ravel's musical style is analyzed in terms of harmony, form, orchestration, melodic structure, cultural influences, and the reflections of his personal characteristics. His combination of traditional forms with innovative harmonies, his use of modal and pentatonic scales, and his enrichment of orchestral colors are identified as the cornerstones of his music. Moreover, his meticulous attention to detail and aesthetic sensitivity are clearly evident throughout his works. In the applied section of the study, Ravel's Sonatine is examined in three movements: Modéré, Mouvement de Menuet, and Animé. Each movement is evaluated in terms of form, harmonic features, and pianistic writing. The analyses demonstrate that while the work preserves classical formal organization, it simultaneously exhibits Impressionist characteristics in its harmonic colors, rhythmic diversity, and use of nuance. This reveals Ravel's successful synthesis of Impressionist atmosphere with classical formal principles. In conclusion, Ravel's music should be regarded not merely as an extension of Impressionism, but as a style that emerged at the intersection of classical tradition and modernist tendencies. By emphasizing precision, detail, and aesthetic integrity, Ravel became one of the most significant figures in 20th-century music. This thesis contributes to musicological literature by presenting both Ravel's artistic personality and his position within Impressionism, as well as offering a detailed analysis of Sonatine. Furthermore, the findings are considered to provide a meaningful point of reference for both performers and listeners.
