Abstract (EN)
ABSTRACT: Statistically, cancer is the second leading cause of mortality in the world after cardiovasculary diseases and has an increasing rate of incidence. It is the most important health problem in the world because of partial mortality is decreasing with an elevating costs. In Turkey, there is an increase in medical oncologists stepping into the profession and new cancer centers are getting built over time. These centers serve the patients locally and therefore cancer statistics can be provided. Methodology: In this research, we aimed to publish the first 2 year cancer statistics in oncology center of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University Education and Research Hospital which is one of the most important cancer center in Eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey. Findings: 298 patients were included in our research between January 2014 and August 2015. The mean age was 60 (±12). 178 patients (%60) were male and the remaining 120 (%40) were female. When cancer types are ranked by frequency, the most common cancers were lung, colorectal and breast cancers which was concordant to the literature. At the end of follow up, 174 (%58) patients were dead, 124 (%42) patients were stillalive. In the whole research group, median survival rate was 9 (1-54) months whereas median overall survival rate was 12.5 (1-68) months. Discussion: In our region, thyroid dysfunction had a higherprevalance than the literature however there was no statistical significance between chemotherapy and thyroid hormones change. Another finding in ours research was the vitamin D deficiency in patients which is probably owing to the cloudy climate in the region and especially colorectal cancer patients must be closely monitored for vit-D levels and replaced which shouldcausebeter oncological outcome. Finally, liver functions and renal functions deteriorate according to chemotherapy and patient, so every cancer patient must be follow up for these functions and treatment modifications must be made.
