Street in public sphere from real to virtual: A review on youtube street interviews

In this study, the interaction between the street, the physical-real space of the classical public space, and social media, which is attributed as the new form of public space, is observed and the existence of the features of the concept of public space is questioned in Turkey through the conversations in these areas. In the first chapter, the concept of public space is analyzed in terms of etymology and semantics, and it is also grounded theoretically. In the second part, communication, which has transformed with technology, is examined on the axis of media and public space. In the research section, which is the last part of the study, street interviews on YouTube, a popular channel of social media, were examined and the conversations in the videos were classified contextually, and a portrait of publicity was tried to be drawn by passing the agenda analysis of the street through the paint of virtuality. In this section, which was designed using qualitative research methods, on the one hand, the videos were categorized on a topic basis using random (random sampling), one of the probability-based sampling methods, within limitations, and on the other hand, audience reactions were analyzed in terms of like-dislike-comment. In the study, in which six hundred and ninety interviews that were found to be suitable in content were examined among more than a thousand interviews, an ambush approach was taken by remaining passive on the platform where the interviews were published. In the study, it was concluded that although the concept of public space is still an ideal concept in terms of democracy, it needs to be updated and even if Turkey partially meets the public space criteria, it does not create a public space due to its pathological structure. The thesis, which is basically shaped by the public sphere views of Arendt and Habermas, relies on the ideas of different thinkers in order to increase understanding. While Arendt's philosophical interpretation of her works prevented understanding and made the study difficult, on the other hand, her thought-provoking style caused the thesis to gain depth. Another difficulty point of the study is that the concept's interdisciplinary content and its extension to many fields necessitates prior knowledge, and its approach requires going to the roots for the expressivity of Habermas' concepts such as communicative action theory, critical theory, and rational negotiation. In addition, the fact that theories do not go beyond theoretical formation complicates how they can be implemented in practice.
