Abstract (EN)

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Mesh Use in Rectocele Repair The pelvic floor anatomy is composed of muscles, ligaments, and fascial tissues, which play a critical role in maintaining urinary and fecal continence, sexual functions, and the normal positioning of organs. Pelvic floor disorders are common among women and significantly impact their quality of life. These disorders include urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, and pelvic organ prolapse (POP). Rectocele, defined as the herniation of the rectum into the vagina, is a type of POP that affects 30-50% of women worldwide. Both conservative and surgical options are available for the treatment of rectocele. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of mesh use in rectocele repair. This retrospective study includes data from 120 patients diagnosed with rectocele at Akdeniz University between 2020 and 2023. Rectocele was confirmed through physical examination and defecography. During the surgeries, Prolene mesh was used to support the pelvic floor. Patients' demographic data, surgery duration, type of anesthesia, and postoperative follow-up details were recorded. Statistical analyses were conducted using R statistical software. Significant improvements were observed in constipation, PAC-QOL, and obstructive defecation syndrome scores after surgery. The most common postoperative complications were mesh protrusion (5%) and recurrence (37.5%). Spinal anesthesia was associated with a lower risk of postoperative complications. Mesh usage emerges as an effective surgical option for rectocele treatment. However, postoperative complications should be closely monitored. After rectocele repair, patients' quality of life improved significantly, and symptoms were notably reduced. Obstetric history and body mass index were identified as important factors influencing treatment outcomes. Key Words: Constipation, Pelvic Floor Disorders (PFD), Rectocele, Mesh, Pelvic Pain.
