Abstract (EN)
Ultra High Strength Concrete (UHSC) is a special and new type of concrete with its high mechanical properties and exceptional durability. It also has wide-ranging applications in the construction industry, especially in high-rise buildings, bridges, and prestressed concrete. However, challenges such as high cost, and unavailability of some of its basic materials (e.g., silica fume), prompted researchers to explore and develop alternative solutions. One potential alternative that attracted attention in this research is Türkiye's local zeolite, a natural mineral with pozzolanic properties. This study investigates the effect of replacing silica with local zeolite on the mechanical properties of UHSC. Zeolite is fairly abundant in Türkiye and has been found to improve concrete properties when used as a pozzolan. To evaluate the effectiveness of zeolite in UHSC, a set of mixtures, with different design ratios, was prepared, 10%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of the silica fume content were replaced with zeolite in mixtures. Experimental results later indicated that replacing 75% of the silica fume with zeolite led to significant improvements in compressive strength that exceeded 120 MPa, especially after modifying the treatment method (i.e., high temperature curing), Flexural strengths above 30MPa were also achieved. These results demonstrate the potential of zeolite as a viable alternative to silica fume in UHSC, providing sustainable and local alternatives for concrete production. This study provides valuable insights for researchers, engineers, and practitioners interested in exploring alternative mineral mixtures in UHSC installation. Further research and development in this area could lead to widespread adoption of zeolite-based UHSC, enhancing resource efficiency and environmental sustainability in the construction industry, the use of indigenous zeolite as a substitute for silica fume in UHSC shows promise in overcoming the challenges associated with conventional UHSC production.
