Abstract (EN)
The purpose of this thesis is to criticize the association of patriarchy and male gender stereotypes in popular recent movies. Our work aims at investigating of four-blockbuster movies -Recep İvedik 2, Kurtlar Vadisi: Irak, Issız Adam ve Güneşi Gördüm- that are assumed to have satisfied the desires of masses in this respect. Therefore, our work shines light on the dominant theme of today?s popular Turkish movies.First, we tried to position the cinema by defining the concepts of ?art? and ?industry?. Also, we analysed certain aspects of popular and independent movies that has different narration by nature. To achieve this, we have developed a panorama of Turkish films during the first section. Then, by weighing on the link between the audience and the films, we have emphasized the perception of the message of the films by the moviegoers in terms of statistical, psychoanalytical, economical and sociological concepts. In the same time, we have also provided a qualitative analysis of general inclinations in Turkey. In the second section, we have not only paid attention to movies as an art form, but also as an object of investigation in the land of social sciences. In light of the social research on the cinema, we have investigated the diversity of conceptual and methodological approaches of scientific feminism while objecting to social science theories based on sexism. Lastly in this section, the linkage of cinema and interaction of sexes in daily relationships and feminist movements were analysed. In that respect, we have made use of concepts developed by three feminist film theorists, namely Laura Mulvey, Tania Modleski and Anneke Smelik. In addition, theoretical thinking?s on male hegemony are provided to analyse the male stereotypes in Turkish cinema. In the third section, built on the foundations of the prior ones, we finally concentrate on the analysis of male characters of the four Turkish movies chosen. In this section, we analysed the male character in Turkish movies. With this in mind, we tried to categorize those male characters of movies shot between 2005 and 2010, based on the social sciences male concepts. In reality, ownership and balance of power and rebellion were questioned behind the characters. When we studied the roles of male characters, we showed how the linkage to ?ideal? model. In this respect, we brought attention to how today?s role models of cinema are displayed within the male patriarchy. How do today?s popular Turkish movies contribute to inner workings of real life male patriarchy? Or, is there a connection between fiction and reality? This thesis is presented as an attempt to find answers to those questions based on the characters played by male actors of four popular movies of our age.In conclusion, male patriarchal movie characters are representations of our society?s values. Male characters of those movies are presented under this wrapper, which we showcase in our work. Those movies that are produced by men, for men actually lay the foundations of a new male stereotype. Despite this, huge success enjoyed by those movies in the box office and the society?s embrace of those characters is an indication of possible continuance of male patriarchy.
