Abstract (EN)

The research shows how the marginalization of homosexual individuals in society from past to present, the suppression of their desires and sexual orientation are reflected through art practice. This thesis research aims to question the perception that shows biological sex as male or female, assigns appropriate roles to it and its impact on art practice through Queer art. The society and belief structure, which classifies the body according to its biological formation, marginalizes LGBTI+ individuals within the society. LGBTI+ is a community that fights for the rights of non-hetero individuals and against labor exploitation. At the same time, the LGBTI+ community has been struggling for years for the reality that the body is not only classified as male or female and that sexual orientations can vary. The works of artists who support the views advocated by this community are also defined as queer art. Even though the concepts of LGBTI+ or queer were encountered in the 1990s, when the works of the past are examined, we come across many works on homosexuality both in the world and in the Ottoman period. However, it is only in recent years that the visibility of this issue as a movement has increased and the struggle for rights has begun. The first reflections of this struggle in the field of art were observed to be partially more in the fluxus movement compared to other art movements. Queer art, which developed later, focused only on LGBTI+ issues. However, queer art first started to be seen in the 1990s in the world and in the 2000s in Turkey. For this reason, this thesis focuses mainly on these periods. With this thesis, the art of marginalized individuals is discussed together with the works of artists such as David Hockney, Henri De Touse Alex Donis, Robert Mapplethorpe, Gilbert and George, Taner Ceylan, Şafak Şule Kemancı, Meltem Sarıkaya, Furkan Öztekin, Ateş Alpar in Turkey. This research aims to show that queer art has always existed by addressing the art of the marginalized from past to present. Keywords: Other, Queer Art, LGBTI+
