Portraitmaking in painting

Portrait emerges both in the World and Europe from the impulse of recording human faces on a surface and includes all artworks that point out to the image of a face from different artistic movements. This research consists of two sections. In the first section the concept of portrait has been explained. The subject been researched by the outlining of Europian and Asian portrait and their similarities and differences has been pointed out. Also the definition of portrait in painting has been concluded by resolving all of its contents that define the portrait. On the second section, the development of portrait painting has been inspected troughout Art history. The basis of development has been declared as antiquitiy. The main course of this thesis is based on Europian portrait art. Also on the second section the portrait concept in minature painting and in the far east is researched for strenghtening the subject. By doing so the approach of different cultures on the same subject has been examined. On this thesis, the formal and technical advancements on portrait painting has been examplified and told on different artists and their artworks. The artworks and artists has been grouped by their era and genre and then explained. By doing so the history of the portrait painting tried to be revealed. Lastly, in the second part of the thesis, Turkish portrait painting is also given place under the title of pre and post Repuclic era. The development of portrait painting in the manner of Europian style has been researched from second constituonalism to our day and has been associated with the artistic acceptance of the world. With the data gained the research has been concluded.
