Analysis of illustrated children's books in terms of bullying by document analysis method

Within this research it is aimed to determine in a multi-perspective way how school bullying is addressed in illustrated children's books. Since the basic data source of the research is illustrated children's books in which the school bullying is investigated in a multi perspective way, document analysis which is one of the qualitative research methods was used. Accordingly fifty illustrated children's books were investigated. The data of the research was collected through control list, which was developed by the researcher, following the bullying literature review. The analysis of the research data was carried out by determining the number of the repetition of the items involved in the control list within the books. According to the findings of the research the information regarding bullying was included in all of the books investigated. According to the result of the research, within the books investigated, it was determined that the statements that evoke the definition of the bullying were included mostly in only one book (E26), among bullying types mostly verbal bullying was dealt with (50.6 %), which is followed by physical bullying, in eight books the one who bullies are males, in seven books they are females, those who are exposed to bullying are male in nine books, in seven books are females, bullies mostly are devote of empathy (33 books), victims mostly were physically weak, the bullying actions mostly take place in school gardens, victims mostly respond to verbal reactions towards the bully, and utilize the strategy of being self-confident in order to get rid of the bullying, the victims mostly share their bullying experiences with their parents and the bystanders mostly prefer to keep silent regarding the bullying experiences. As a result, by encountering the children these kinds of books, it can be ensured that children can have awareness toward bullying and they can understand the importance of being not a mere bystander in the sense of victim.
