Instructional leadership behavior of public and private school directors

The purpose of this study is to determine the execution level of instructional leadership duties of public and private school directors. Besides relationship between instructional leadership and the type of school & directors? personal qualifications was investigated. A version of the PIMRS questionnaire developed by Halliger (1983) adapted to Turkish Ministry Of Education was used in the research. This was applied to public & private school teachers working at Istanbul?s Bahçelievler, Bakırköy & Besiktas residential areas between 16.6.2005 - 10.9.2005 In addition personal information form was given to directors. 473 questionnaires were considered as objectively and accurately filled & SPSS package programmer was executed to obtain analysis within the framework of research objectives. Results with regards to school type and directors? personal information were presented in form of percentages and frequencies .Differences regarding distribution of two groups were analyzed through independent group t- test, whereas differences regarding distribution of more than two groups were analyzed through one ? way variance analysis . Duncan test was used to find the source of differences between groups. Research Findings are summarized as follows: Public and private schools have similarities with regards to their directors? gender and marital status variables. Private school directors belong to lower age group, lower teaching and administrative seniority averages, whereas they possess higher level of educational background. Teachers have perceived that directors perform their protection of time duties at most times while perform their other instructional leadership duties at some times. Public school directors perform their instructional leadership duties at some times, however private school directors perform them at most times. There are meaningful differences regarding instructional leadership levels of private and public school directors. Director?s gender and marital status variables cause meaningful differences within majority of school directors? instructional leadership duties, whereas age, teaching and administrative seniority, undergraduate and graduate education and branch individual variables cause meaningful differences within all of instructional leadership duties of directors.
