A Comparison of school managers and physical training teachers in terms of leadership in state schools and private schools

Akif ZİYAGİL Prof.Dr.Muhittin AŞKIN This study was conducted to determine the display frequency of the "initiation of structure" and "consideration" dimensions of leadership in view of the managers and physical training teachers in both private and state schools. The research was based on data obtained from 617 teachers and managers of 145 schools, 116 state and 29 private. Five-point rating scale was used in questionnaire. In total 617 questionnaire was evaluated; 395 managers from 339 state and 56 private schools; and 222 physical training teachers from 181 state and 41 private schools. The data collection tool was a questionnaire, which was consisted of questions in "initiation of structure" and "consideration" dimensions of leadership in "Leadership Behaviour Description Questionnaire". The data was evaluated by calculating frequency, percentage and means. The difference of views among managers and physical training teachers both in state and private schools were investigated using "t" test within 0.05 significance limits. According to the results, a significant difference was found between the views of state school managers and private school managers on some questions whereas some were insignificant. A significant difference was found between the views of state and private school physical training teachers on some questions in "initiation of structure" dimension but insignificant difference was on some. A significant difference on some questions in "consideration dimension" between views of state and private school managers while differences on some questions were insignificant. The views of physical training teachers on some questions" from state and private schools were significantly different while on some questions were insignificant. Thus, managers and physical training teachers should be a leader in their schools and display leadership behaviour. Moreover, school managers should establish a good relation ship and cooperation with physical training teacher and students and create a modern teaching - leorning envinonment in order to display the "initiation of structure" and "consideration" aspects.
