A comparative evaluation of the paintings of oriantalist painter Stanislav Von Chelebowsky and painter Martyr Hasan Rıza

Modern Turkish painting is based on a fairly long developmentalprocess. Reformation movements of the 18th century influenced paintingtogether with the other socio-cultural structures. The most importantdevelopment of this period is the beginning of the painting courses both inthe military colleges and civil schools.Following these developments Sultan Abdülaziz, who supportedpainting and ordered lots of portraits, had a crucial role in the Turkishpainting. One of his important contributions is the invitation of Stanislav VonChelebowsky to the empire and formation of a significant repertoire. Theseartists had a long standing influence which is not limited to their own timesbut continued within the atmosphere of the later generations. Especially,Stanislav Von Chelebowsky who painted important historical wars and eventsof the Ottoman Empire impressed lots of people and inspired paintersfollowing him.One of these artists is Şehit Hasan Rıza who produced similar paintingswith Stanislav Von Chelebowsky in terms of subject, technique, compositionand style. Despite that this similarity does not go to beyond the limits ofinspiration. The similarities and differences of these two important paintershave been investigated and the reasons behind them questioned in thisstudy. A detailed research has been carried out before the comparison oftheir paintings.The history of Turkish painting has been studied firstly. Then,Orientalism in relation with Stanislav Von Chelebowsky and military paintersin relation with Şehit Hasan Rıza has been investigated. Lastly the life andunderstanding of these two painters have been considered.Comparative analysis of the paintings of two artists has been executedin the light of abovementioned studies. The paintings of these two artists arepresented in two separate catalogues. The similarities and differences ofthese two painters have been investigated and then the reasons behind themquestioned.The similarities and differences of these two important painters havebeen investigated and their contributions to the Turkish painting have beeninvestigated within the scope of this study.
