The efefcts of resveratrol, lipoic acid and vitamin C on lipophilic vitamins, cholesterol and fatty acid composition in liver, kidney and erythrocytes of type-1 diabetic rats

Abstract (EN)

In this study, the effects of resveratrol, ?-lipoic acid and vitamin C on erythrocyte, liver and kidney cholesterol, ADEK vitamins and the fatty acid levels of Wistar Albino rats which were injected with streptozotocin (STZ). In the study, 50 2-month-old male Wistar Albino rats were randomly selected and divided into 5 groups. The control group consisted of the rats receiving a basal diet; the Diabetes (D) group consisted of the rats receiving a basal diet and a 55 mg/kg intraperitoneal STZ injection; the Diabetes + Lipoic acid (D +LA) group consisted of the rats receiving a basal diet, STZ and a 50 mg/kg intraperitoneal lipoic acid injection; the Diabetes + Resveratrol (D+R) group consisted of the rats receiving a basal diet, STZ and a 30 mg/kg intraperitoneal resveratrol injection and finally the Diabetes +Vitamin C (D +VC) group consisted of the rats receiving a basal diet, an STZ injection and a 50 mg/kg intraperitoneal Vitamin C injection. ?-tocopherol level in erythrocytes was higher in the D+LA group (p<0.05), and the cholesterol level was higher in the D+LA and D+VC groups (p<0.05, p<0.01). The liver cholesterol amount increased in the diabetes and D+R groups (p< 0.05, p< 0.01). ?-tocopherol level increased in the D+R group when compared to the control group (p<0.05). The kidney cholesterol levels increased in all groups (p<0.0001).İn the erythrocytes, ratio of Linoleic acid (18:2 n-6) increased in all the diabetes groups (p<0.05,), ratio of the arachidonic acid (20:4 n-6) decreased in all groups (p<0.05), when compared to the control group. İn the D+VC group the ratio of palmitoleic acid (16:1, n-9) in the liver significantly increased (p<0.0001), when compared to the control groups. Ratio of 18:2 increased in the D+LA and D+R groups when compared to the control group; and decreased in the D+VC group (p<0.0001). While the ratio of docosaheksaenoic acid (22:6 n-3) increased in all groups (p<0.0001), the ratio of 20:4 decreased in all of the groups (p<0.0001), when compared to the control group. The 16:1 and 18:1ratios in kidney tissue decreased in all groups when compared to the control group (p<0.0001), while the 20:4 and 22:6 ratios increased (p<0.001). Consequently, it was found that resveratrol, lipoic acid and vitamin C treatment had different levels of effects on the fatty acid profiles, lipophilic vitamins and cholesterol in rats with experimental diabetes.Key Words: Resveratrol, ?-Lipoic Acid, Vitamin C, Cholesterol ?-tocopherol, Retinol, Fatty Acid Composition
