Abstract (EN)
One of the upcoming areas in literature is the topic of women and writing, that is writing conducted by women, about women's inner lives and worlds through the basis of feminist literary theory and feminist approach. Women writers take a different approach in order to highlight and deconstruct gender roles in various genres and areas. To put it somewhat differently, they examine the canonical literary works through a new lens. The act of revisiting is crucial for developing a feminist literary canon without the exclusion of women in fictional works. This thesis is on the topic of the place of women in fantastic literature focusing on women writers Madeline Miller and Jennifer Saint, who choose to retell the classical myths under the area of fantastic literature. Their aim is to situate women as the main characters while providing insights into the female experiences and perspectives in their works Circe and Ariadne highlight several topics including individuality, domesticity, motherhood, and female identity. They situate the works through a comparison of Homer's The Iliad (800-700 BCE) and The Odyssey (725-675 BCE) and Ovid's Metamorphoses (8 BCE) and Heroides (date of publication unknown, presumed to be 1-20 BCE).
