Abstract (EN)

In this study, marriage, marriage contract and divorce, which are the most basic stages of the family institution in the Ottoman society, were discussed and the marriage records of Atina (Pazar) district of Rize were evaluated. First of all, the formation of the family, the marriage process starting with the engagement, the procedures and conditions of the marriage contract, divorce, the consequences of divorce and also how family law takes place were examined. Accordingly, information is given about the application of permission in Ottoman law. Finally, the marriage records of Atina (Pazar) district of Rize were transcribed and a facsimile of the marriage records providing information about the marriages that took place in the district was made. In the light of the information obtained from these records, the social, cultural and economic life of the region is revealed. In this way, it is aimed to contribute to studies on the structure and functioning of the family institution in the provinces of Ottoman society.
