Özet (EN)
Lucius Ampelius' Liber Memorialis gives important information about the education of a supposedly 14-16 year old Roman student. L. Ampelius is thought to have lived in the 3rd or 4th century A.D. Ampelius wrote a book that consisted of 50 chapters formed around very broad topics such as cosmography, mythology, physical geography, the wonders of the world, genealogy of the gods, a brief history of the Eastern Mediterranean, Greece and the Roman state which "a Roman youth should know and learn". This book comes to the fore when compared with other ancient works that have survived to the present day in terms of content. Although we have a lot information about the Roman education system, especially through many writers such as Quintilianus, Ampelius' work is divided into topics and sheds light on the Roman education system in the context of education and the information taught. Although this work has been researched and studied by modern researchers, it has not been discussed and studied in the context of Roman education system. Liber Memorialis gives information not only about what a Roman boy should know, but also about Roman ideology and traditional structure. Considering that the concept of education observes moral standards in the Roman state, Ampelius' work offers theoretical information with moral practices. Besides, the "things to know" of a Roman youth shows the limits of a Roman youth's knowledge. In this study, Liber Memorialis will be introduced in the context of the Roman education system and its place in the system will be discussed.
