ABSTRACT MSc. THESIS THE EFFECTS OF BIT OPERATING PARAMETERS AND ROCK PROPERTIES ON RATE OF PENETRATION IN ROTARY DRILLING Tayfan Yusuf YÜNSEL DEPARTMENT OF MINING ENGINEERING INSTITUTE OF NATURAL AND APPLIED SCIENCES UNIVERSITY OF ÇUKUROVA Supervisor: Doc. Dr. Adem ERSOY Year: 2001 Page: 92 Jury : Prof. Dr. Mesut ANIL : Assoc. Prof. Dr. Adem ERSOY : Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hasan CETIN In this study, salt production boreholes and an oil well drilling were investigated. For both drilling, drilling rig, drilling bits, bit operating parameters, mud properties, the properties of drilled rocks, casing and cementing were evaluated. The salt production boreholes drilled by the Institute of Mineral Research and Exploration (MTA) for the Mersin Soda Industry in Adana-Karakuyu-Arabali region have been evaluated. The technical characteristics of drilling equipment and cone (rock) bits used in the boreholes have been explained. Generally, caliche, claystone with siltstone, salt and anhydrite interbedding formations of Pliocene-Messinian age were drilled. The density and viscosity properties of the drilling mud were continuously measured. Revolution per minute (RPM) and Weight on bit (WOB) were kept constant or particular intervals during drilling. Because, it was considered that geological and mechanical characteristics of the drilled formations did not vary critically. The salt reserve did not determined exactly. But, the salt thickness map of the underground suggests that there may be a huge potential of salt. The oilwell drilling was carried out by Turkish Petroleum Corporation in the region of Ceyhan-Soysalli. The drilling parameters such as rate of penetration, WOB, torque were continuously measured during drilling. The effects of the bit operating parameters on rate of penetration and relationship of these parameters with each other were established. During drilling, the dominant clay formations were cut. The properties of drilling mud were controlled continuously. The depth of drilling well was about 2000 m. The deviation was measured throughout drilling and no significant deviation has been recorded. Any indication of oil were not met.
