The effect of psychiatric care practice in depression based on the Roy adaptation model on medication adherence, general self-efficacy, self-esteem, and depression level

Objective: The purpose of the study is to determine the effect of Psychiatric Care Practice in Depression based on the Roy Adaptation Model on medication adherence, general self-efficacy, self-esteem, and depression level in depression inpatients. Method: The study is a quasi-experimental with a non-randomized control group. It was carried out between March and November 2020 with 42 patients (21: control group, 21: Psychiatric Care Practice in Depression group) who were depression inpatients in the Akdeniz University Hospital Psychiatry Clinic and met the criteria of the study. Data were collected with Patient Information Form, Morisky Medication Adherence Scale, General Self-Efficacy Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Except for routine clinical care practices, no intervention was performed for the patients in the control group. Data of the Psychiatric Care Practice in Depression group were collected with data collection form based on the Roy Adaptation Model and psychiatric care was provided in line with the Psychiatric Care Practice in Depression based on the Roy Adaptation Model during hospitalization. Data were evaluated with the SPSS 26.0 package program. Results: It was found that Psychiatric Care Practice in Depression based on the Roy Adaptation Model increased medication adherence (p=0.000), increased self-esteem (p=0.000), and significantly reduced depression level (p=0.000) compared to the control group in depression inpatients. There was no statistically significant difference in the general self-efficacy level of the patients (p=0.054). Conclusion: The results of the study show that Psychiatric Care Practice in Depression based on the Roy Adaptation Model increases medication adherence, has no effect on the general self-efficacy level, increases self-esteem and reduces depression level in depression inpatients. It is recommended to continue psychiatric care practices based on the Roy Adaptation Model in practices and studies.
