ABSTRACT SAMPLES FROM RÜSTEM PAŞA MOSQUE?S TILES Özcan, Meryem Master Thesis Education of Traditional Turkish Hand Crafts Science Advisor: Prof. Tevhide ÖZBAĞI June- 2007 In this thesis, İznik and Kütahya tiles in İstanbul Rüstem Paşa Mosque are reached through the search of literature about tile art which is one of our traditional arts and patterns and composition characteristics of these tiles are assessed in the light of these. İznik and Kütahya tiles in the Rüstem Paşa Mosque constitute the universe of this research. Information about drawings and characteristics of 50 patterns that take place in sample is given. Study consists of five chapters and 218 pages. In first chapter, problem of the study is dealt with, familiarization of traditional Turkish tile art to next generations and finding of patterns of tiles in Mosque are intended in the study. In second chapter; definition, history and usage areas of Turkish tile art, tools and devices used in Turkish tile art, motifs, techniques and tile making phases are handled in detail. Books and articles which compose the source of this research are explained with their contents. In third chapter, universe and sample of the research are expressed through numerical data. Collection and analysis of data are circumstantiated in the context of process which is followed in the study. In the findings and interpretation chapter; history, geographical conditions and religious structures of Istanbul are examined and parts of the Mosque are presented with their photographs under the information about Mosque title. In fifth chapter, data derived from the research and suggestions are introduced by the researcher. As a consequence; most of the tiles found in the Mosque are composed in square form, cobalt-blue, coral red, turquoise are used extensively and underglaze technique is applied.
