The analysis of the idioms in the Arabic translation of Sabahattin Ali's Madonna in a Fur Coat in terms of equivalences

Translation, which acts as a bridge between civilizations, is an essential activity that provides the expressions existing in one language to be transferred to another language. The successful execution of this transfer is related to the translator's mastery of the culture of the source and target language, the subtleties of language and pronunciation, polysemous words and phrases, briefly, it is about possessing the vocabulary of the language. One of the most important elements of vocabulary items is idioms. Because idioms are structures that contain arts such as metaphor, simile and figure of speech, which enable to convey what is meant to be explained in a short and effective way. Since idioms differ from society to society and therefore they reflect cultural identity, it can cause difficulties in transferring them to another language. As a matter of fact, a literal translation does not always ensure that the idiomatic expression is understood in the target language. In this context, the strategies to be followed in idiom translations get involved. Within the scope of this study, the analysis of Sabahattin Ali's Madonna in a Fur Coat and 82 idioms in its Arabic translation was made comparatively and similar meaning similar form translation strategy 12, similar meaning different form translation strategy 33, Interpretations were made by giving 22 examples for the translation strategy by paraphrasing and 4 examples suitable for the translation strategy by subtraction were interpreted by using the four equivalence strategies suggested by Mona Baker in the translation of idioms. Also, examples that were not included in the work but were transferred as 11 idioms in the Arabic translation are also included. This study consists of an introduction and two parts. In the first part, the conceptual framework has been revealed, idiom translation and the strategies that can be used in idiom translation have been touched on, and in the second part, the idioms discussed have been comparatively evaluated within the scope of equivalence. It has been observed that the translator has a command of the target language and culture as well as the source language and culture.
