Gypsum vitrails have been used as an important subject of decoration and lighting in both today and previous periods of architectural buildings. Vitrails, composed of several designs and coloured glass, have been preferred to create different effects in lighting of indoor areas. Generally, vitrails which were mostly used in religious architechture implementations in the Ottoman period, are fancy windows that are produced by placing colured glass between each two gypsum frames.In addition to being mostly used in religious architecture, vitrails have been used in civil architecture. There are some civil architecture gypsum vitrail samples in Safranbolu where is famous for its world cultural heritage. The subject of this research covers design, technical and colour characteristics of gypsum vitrails in historic buildings in Safranbolu.This research, based on vitrail samples in civil and religious architecture of Safranbolu, are researched and besides photographs and drawings, design, technical and colur analyzes of determined vitrails are carried out.As a result of researches and examinations, it is obtained that geometric, herbal and written ornament kinds of gypsum vitrails in architecture buildings in Safranbolu, have been produced by using red, yellow, blue, green, transparent and pink colured glass.It is necessary to conserve and documentate the vitrails being destroyed by both nature and human sources day by day. Especially, it is very important to conserve the historical Safranbolu houses? vitrails that include civil architecture samples and also are the base of this research.
