Assessment of students' work safety perception at health science faculty: Fırat University sample

The health sector is a sector where occupational accidents and occupational diseases are seen intensely. The employees at health Institutes will be able to both protect and improve their own health and security and protect the patients' health and security better when they learn their rights and responsibilities in terms of occupational health and safety. Our country doesn't have a good history in terms of occupational health and safety. Especially in terms of the rate of deaths resulted from work accidents, it is the first in Europe and the third in the world. Health sector ranks among the sectors in which work accidents occur commonly. Education for occupational health security and boosting the culture of occupational health safety have an important place in the studies related to minimizing work accidents in our country. There isn't given enough due importance to the occupational health safety both at high school and university. That's why graduates face with the occupational health safety issue seriously for the first time in the working environments. Although there is given importance to the occupational health safety and culture at institutionalized foundations, this situation isn't observed at all foundations. Health Science Faculty students accepted as potential health workers are included in this study. For this purpose, their work safety perception is evaluated, and while this was carried out, awareness about the occupational health and safety was aimed to be developed. The target population of the study embodies all the students studying Health Science Faculty associated with Firat University in a 2017-2018 academic year. Students study in three departments: Nursing, Midwifery, Nutrition and Dietetics and twelve classrooms at Health Science Faculty. The total number of the student studying at the faculty is 1252. The data of the study were obtained with the face-to-face interview method between October and November in 2017. The number of assessed interviews is 420. The assessment of work safety perception has been graded according to Five Point Likert Scale. The reliability co-efficient of the study has been founded as 0.84, and this result shows that the study is reliable. The students' work safety perception has been calculated as 3,14 points out of average 5 points from the general result of the study. This result means that their work safety perception is satisfactory. Key Words: Health, Work Health and Safety, Work Safety, Student Perception.
