Examination of health workers' attitudes towards homosexuality the case of Mersin

This study aims to examine the attitudes and perspectives of healthcare professionals in a public hospital in Mersin province towards homosexuality. Homosexuality is a form of identity that is still met with prejudices in many societies, and this situation creates serious obstacles for LGBT+ individuals, especially in the process of accessing health services. Within the scope of the research, it is aimed to determine the attitudes of healthcare professionals towards this disadvantaged group, to determine the level of prejudice and to raise awareness based on scientific knowledge. The research was conducted between March 2024 and June 2025 and the data were collected between December 8, 2024 and February 8, 2025. A 36-question questionnaire developed by the researcher measuring demographic information as well as knowledge and attitudes towards homosexuality was used as a data collection tool. The questionnaire was collected online from 200 healthcare professionals on a voluntary basis. Participants from different professions and education levels such as doctors, midwives, nurses, health technicians (medical secretary, radiology, medical imaging, home care, laboratory, dental prosthesis, anesthesia), health officers and other health personnel (social worker, biologist, audiologist, physiotherapist, pharmacist) were included in the study. The findings of the study were analyzed with IBM SPSS Statistics 25 software; the relationships between the occupational group and the answers given to the survey questions were evaluated with the Chi-Square test.
