Demand for supply and trust in physicians in health care: A study based on patient views

In this study, it is aimed to examine the unnecessary use of health services arising from the service provider in the health sector and the issues of trust in the physician through patient perception. In addition, it is also among the aims of the study to determine whether the supply creates unnecessary demand and whether the perception of trust in the physician differs according to the personal and demographic characteristics of the participants. The population of the study consists of people over the age of 18 (eighteen) who applied to the outpatient clinics of Yozgat Bozok University Hospital. Approximately 400 outpatients daily and 12,500 monthly outpatients receive service from this hospital. In this case, the sample size of the research was calculated as 631 with 99% confidence level and 1% error. The number of people reached in this research was 650 people. In the literature review conducted within the scope of the study, the "Scale of Evaluation of Unnecessary Supply-Based Health Service Use" and "Doctor Trust Scale" were used, which are thought to be suitable for the purposes of the study. Significance test of the difference between two means, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and correlation analyzes were used to test the hypotheses of the research. As a result of the analyzes, it was determined that there was a statistically significant difference between the personal and demographic characteristics of the participants in the scales and all other characteristics except health insurance. In addition, a negative and strong relationship was found between all sub-dimensions of the Physician Trust Scale and the Unnecessary Supply-Based Health Care Use Scale. Accordingly, as the perception of supply creating demand increases, the perception of trust in the physician decreases. This situation was also confirmed in the regression analysis and the variance to the explained was found to be 85%. As a result of the study, it is recommended to prevent unnecessary service-providing behaviors of physicians for various reasons by focusing on courses and practices that give more importance to professional ethics in medical education, and to develop the behaviors of requesting unnecessary service or rejecting this service in case of unnecessary service by increasing the health literacy of citizens. In addition, practices and news that undermine confidence in the medical profession, which has been considered sacred since the past, should be avoided as much as possible.
