The presentation of contents related alternative medicine on health blogs

Abstract (EN)
People, by their nature, consult all means within the possibilities to live long and healthy. One of these ways is alternative medicine practices. Rapidly developing information and communication technologies provide the popularization of information, products and practices about avoiding diseases and treatments. This interest in health causes increasing infollution and confusion about health especially in internet (blogs, web sites, forums etc.). In this regard, this research aiming to analyze the contents related alternative medicine on health blogs. With this purpose, 230 contents in four blogs were analyzed through content analyze method. Research results are shown in three subheading which are general information, blogs' design and contents. In general, the blogs included in research are managed by people who are not specialized in health and for the purpose of advise, is presented. Furthermore, when blogs' design is studied, it was shown that blogs have positive elements in terms of interaction and are generally user friendly. About the contents presented in the blogs it is founded that; there are no commercial and trading aims, contents are producted irregularly, daily/basic language is used, multimedia platform elements are included, negative approaches to modern medicine are not seen. Most popular topics in contents are; "endocrin, nutirion and metabolic disease", "disease of the blood and blood-forming organs and certain disorders involving the immune mechanism" and " diseases of digestive system". The source of these information are shown in two type as native and foreign. Hereunder, new media (internet news, blogs) is most used as native source, books and magazines are most used as foreign source. Finally, three out of four in the contents, both preventing and treating practices are shown. Herb/Herbal products, handmade medications are the most recommended practices. To sum up, it is determined that there are both positive and negative outcomes in alternative medicine blogs in Turkey. According to the research, proposals are brought to further teorical and pratical studies about early pointed outcomes.
