The concept of ?ethics? according to health professionals and their demands from theoretical medical ethicists

This study was planned to determine what the health careprofessionals understand from the concept of ethics, and to find out theirexpectations from the academicians who study theoretical medical ethics.In the research part of the thesis the views of 192 physicians and 192nurses from Cumhuriyet University Research Hospital, İzzettin KeykavusPublic Hospital and Sivas Governmental Hospital were obtained through aquestioner of 27 questions; these findings were discussed aftercomparing among the professionals, and also with the results of differentsurveys in the literature. According to the results of the study, it wasdetermined that the professionals participated the study have a tendencyto comprehend the concept of ethics as applied ethics in general, andalso inclined to understand medical ethics as a miniature legal systemspecific to the health care society in particular. The expectations ofparticipants from the academicians who make theoretical study in medicalethics were firstly, to play an active role in resolving the problemsexperienced in daily medical practice, hence participate in ethicscommittees, and secondly to continue their function increasingly in preandpost-graduate period.Key Words: Theoretical and Practical Dimensions of Medical ethics,Medical Ethicists, Health Professionals, Medical Ethics.
