Translation and analysis of Şahabettin Süleyman and Mehmet Fuat Köprülü's named Yeni Osmanlı Tarih-i Edebiyatı

The first traces of literary history, which records the literature of nations, are found in the West. Literature, which gained a national character with the development of nation-oriented ideas in Europe, gained a scientific perspective. In this context, the first methodological approaches begin to appear in literary history. Thus, literary historiography draws its own path over time as a result of research. The first examples in Turkish literary history are the biographies. After the Tanzimat, with the positivist approach coming from Europe, literature was evaluated in a more methodical way. In 1888, the expression "literary history" appeared in Turkish literature when Abdülhalim Memduh wrote the work called Tarih-i Edebiyat-ı Osmaniye. After this work, many works were written under the name of literary history, continuing the tradition of classical biographies. The work titled New Ottoman History of Literature, written jointly by Şahabettin Süleyman and Köprülüzade Mehmet Fuat, is one of the first examples of modern literary historiography. The work that is the subject of this study was transcribed into Latin letters and examined in terms of the topics it addressed. In line with this purpose, the first part of the study includes literary historiography, literary historiography in the West, and Turkish literary historiography. In the second part, the work is introduced and Şahabettin Süleyman and Köprülüzade Mehmet Fuat's views on literary history are revealed. In the last part of the study, the translation of the work into Latin letters is given and the original text of the work is presented.
