Sait Faik's short stories: Character, action, setting

This study offers a multilayered analysis of Sait Faik Abasıyanık's narrative universe through the axes of individual–society–space, revealing how aesthetic innovation, ethical stance, and social critique intertwine within the fictional framework of modern Turkish storytelling. Adopting a critical perspective, the research investigates the dynamics that shaped the author's literary identity and positioned him as a pioneer of post-1950 Turkish short fiction. The stories are examined through representations of leadership, modes of conformity and deviation, cycles of desire and need, strategies of escape, and the social functions of space. Findings indicate that individual fragilities generate aesthetic forms of resistance against mechanisms of social pressure, and that the construction of character, action, and setting assumes a transformative function on both local and universal levels. Drawing on key concepts from prominent theorists in psychology and sociology—including Freud, Lacan, Fromm, Kristeva, Weber, Durkheim, Habermas, Bourdieu, Foucault, Butler, Bachelard, and Lefebvre—the study elucidates the social roles and ethical positions of narrative characters. The interdisciplinary framework encompasses character typologies ranging from leadership to deviation, action patterns extending from desire to escape, and the transformative impact of these patterns on social life dynamics. Settings imbued with social interaction expose the fractures and resistance points induced by modernization, while also reflecting societal diversity and aesthetic resistance from the author's perspective. Ultimately, Sait Faik's stories emerge as aesthetic representations of resistance that render visible the fragile balances of modernization and the individual quest for truth. The analysis of character, action, and setting contributes both conceptually and methodologically to the field.
