Determination of the problems related to weeds in corn fields of Sakarya province

Sakarya province, which has thefertilesoil of the Marmara Region, has an important place in term of corn production. Inthisstudy, a questionary study was conducted by intervie wing corn growers Sakarya in 2019 in order to identify the trouble some weed species in the fields, the weed control methods applied in the region, and also toreveal the factors that are thought toaffect weeds and their control. Within this frame work of the study, the answers of 22 question directed to 50 corn growers in districts of Sakarya; Adapazarı, Erenler, Akyazı, Hendek, Serdivan, Söğütlü, were evaluated. As a consequence, the growers stated that the most trouble some weeds in their fields were Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers. (Johnson grass) and Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P.B. (barnyardgrass) and these species cause yield losses and harvest problems. An 80% of growers preferred chemical control and apply post-emergence herbicides for controlling weeds: 66% of growers preferred nicosulfuron and dicamba+tritosulfuron, 70% and 32% of the growers id not comply with there commended dose and period of herbicides. Inaddition, it is determined that the growers have been applying the herbicides with the same mode of action for a long time.
