Determination of radon concentration in building in Sakarya University campus region

Abstract (EN)

In this thesis study, seasonal alternating radon in different buildings (faculties, residences, lodgings, administrative and academic units, etc.) in the SAÜ campus to measure indoor concentration radon activity concentrations at Sakarya University Campus Settlement, calculate annual radiological doses and create a radiological risk map of the campus area. and the factors affecting radon gas accumulation were determined. According to the measurements made, the indoor radon density varies between 0,2 Bqm-3–149,53 Bqm-3. Annual average radon activity was found to be 38,7 Bqm-3, with an average annual effective dose of 1.09 mSv/y. In order to reach these results, LR-115 type plastic detectors were placed in offices and student classrooms of 32 officers and instructors in the campus campus of Sakarya University Campus and the change of seasonal radon concentration was measured every 3 months by replacing the detectors with new ones. Films taken in these periods were brought to the laboratories and track scraping method was used to perform alpha counting. The number of traces on alpha-sensitive detectors was determined using a 10x10 magnification optical microscope and the trace density results corresponding to the radon concentration were obtained. In this study, a questionnaire consisting of questionnaires such as seasonal variation of ventilation and ventilation was applied in the offices where some academicians and administrative staff working in faculties were measured and the results obtained were compared with measured radon activity concentration results. most ventilation was done in spring and summer. The average seasonal radon intensities at the end of the study were lowest (21,1 Bq/m3) in the summer and the highest (63,1 Bq/m3) in the winter. These values were found to be in agreement with the results of the questionnaire. In addition, radon activity concentrations measured between the floors of faculty buildings were compared and it was observed that the radon concentration decreased as they moved upstairs. The measurement results were compared with the radon concentration value (200-600 Bq/m3 for houses) determined by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) and the results were below this limit.
