The review of Salih Zeki Bey's Work "Hikmet-i Tabîiyyeyi Umûmiyyeden Mebhâs-ı Savt" (Matter of Sound in Knowledge of General Nature) and The Chapter "Sounds of Music"

There are different systems that have been used in Turkish Music Theory from to past to the current times. In this day and age, Arel-Ezgi Melody System is used in theory. Although this system differs from the system that was founded by Rauf Yekta Bey in some certain aspects, its foundations are based on the system that was found by him. Rauf Yekta Bey had important contributions on finding of scientific basics of our music and acoustics. In his studies, Yekta got assistance from Salih Zeki Bey who was a famous physicist and mathematician. Salih Zeki Bey (1864-1921) was a mathematician and physicist who had lived in last era of Ottoman Empire. He is well accepted as a leading name of science histography due to the breakthroughs he had contributed in different branches of science. He had worked in various institutes, been a teacher in Darülfünun for years and written many important works. One of these works is "Hikmet-i Tabîiyye-i Umûmiyyeden Mebhâs-ı Savt" (Matter of Sound in Knowledge of General Nature) that we had access in TTK Library digital source number "A005920". The work is important due to its quality as the first publishing on the subject of acoustics in Ottoman Era. In this study, it is aimed to make Mebhâs-ı Savt (Matter of Sound) to become utilisable. In consideration of this aim the whole work is transcribed to modern Turkish. The section of "Sounds of Music" is reviewed to demonstrate Salih Zeki Bey's scientific contribution to our music.
