Changing situations between art work and exhibition practice (Documenta 12 and 4. tate triennial)

By the beginning of the 21st century, ?modernity? has become a decisive point of reference in defining contemporary culture. The decisive role that Ancient Greece-Rome has played in Western history is now attributed to the history of modernity. In discussions of historicalization and revitalization, modernity comes up in many forms such as opposing, other, alter and meta. Resulting from the primordial relationship between the appearance of art history as an academic discipline and the emergence of modernism, influences of similar modernist presentations can be observed in exhibition practices that aim to present art. Concerning artistic applications and exhibition practices, this debated tendency of modernity to return isn't independent of the culture we're living in. Therefore, the fact that modernity still continues to influence the flow of culture, makes it unavoidable not to question what kind of effects modernity has. Documenta 12 and the fourth Tate Triennial which focus on discussions about modernity with regard to the way exhibition practices transform together with art works are the two decisive exhibitions that set forth new approaches in theory and application. While dealing with the new appearances of modernity in the context of the dynamic relationship between exhibition practices and art works, these two events are also suggestive of the current art scene. In this context, the changing positions between art works and exhibition practices, and the relationship between the present culture-art scene and modernity open up an actual space for discussion.
