Abstract (EN)

Throughout the history of humanity, each age has had its own images of each culture. The butterfly image is one of them. The story of transforming the butterfly image from local cultural codes to universal cultural codes has been examined through art history. As a result of the widespread use of technology and communication tools in our age, images find their place in the universal memory of the modern world which shrinks with the meaning of the symbols they are loaded. The expression of butterfly elegance is a metaphor of discourse known throughout the world today. Like butterfly life, it's like understanding short life. Thinking with images and designing images is one of the oldest intellectual processes of humanity. While the butterfly represents short life in some cultures, it is the symbol of eternal life in ancient Egyptians. The rich form and color diversity of butterflies, their slimness and short life have enabled the formation of rich metaphors in the world of human meaning. As a land animal, the butterfly transformed from a simple caterpillar into a flying creature with colorful wings and patterns, which inspired a great deal. In this thesis, the biological anatomy of the butterfly image has been explained in order to analyze the meaning lattice and then it has been given examples about its use in art fields and its use as images. Keywords: Butterfly Image, Metaphor in Art, Art History
