Ereğli's post-1980 urbanization process within the context of the relationship between industry and population

The developments created by social, economic and political changes in urban space determine the urbanization process. The relationship between migration and urbanization is like a chain of rings, which is a connection to each other. In a phase in which urbanization differs in parallel to industrialization, the effect of immigration is an undeniable reality. In this context, industrial and population relations, immigration and urbanization cases should be taken into consideration if these events are based on these facts. Therefore, the social dimension of urbanization is considered as migration and the economic dimension as industrialization. This study aims to analyze Eregli's post-1980 urbanization process in the terms of industry and population relations. In this study, the urbanization experience that Ereğli, a heavy industrial city, faced during this process is explained by socioeconomic factors. The data was collected via semi-structured interviews with neighbourhood mukhtars and aldermen. Furthermore, the hypothesis were tested by analysing the formation of Ereğli city macroform. In addition, Ereğli's changing population due to remigration and the level of neoliberal policies on the city were also mentioned in the study. Finally, the conclusion reached is that the migration-receiving urbanization process continued in 1980s, the net migration pace slowed down in 2000s and the city has gradually been a retired people's town.
