Vows and holy visits of Şanlıurfa

Şanlıurfa is a region, which is very rich in holy places, when the other cities of Turkey are considered. It is said that Hz. Adem, Hz. Eyyüb, Hz. Ibrahim, Hz. Ismail and Hz. Ishak lived in this city. Thus, the city is named as ?City of Prophets?. It is possible to find a place for vows, a tomb, an entombed Saint or a tree counted as holy both in the city center and in its villages and countries. In this study, which is related to Şanlıurfa the concepts and terms connected with places for vows and holy visits were explained by mentioning the general features of the city. In the main part of the study, for the first time, the dispersion of the places for vows and holy visits in Şanlıurfa was made according to its countries and villages. The places counted as holly are classified whether they have a legend or not. Legends were examined in the scope of Saint Cult and the main motives included in these legends were analyzed. In another part of the study, these places for vows and holy visits were classified according to their functions.
