The reflections of the impact of war on the nature on the art of painting

In this study, the reflections of the two great world wars of the 20th century and the effects of social events on nature on the art of painting were examined. The technological wars of the 20th century have not only led to massive human slaugter, but also devastated the nature and made it uninhabitable. During the Gulf War that took place in the last quarter of the 20th century and the civil wars in the same region that started with the Arab Spring in the first quarter of the 21st century, nature suffered an identical damage to man. In the face of all this devastation and violence, some artists have made pictures that display the effects of social events on nature. Artists have tried to show the devastation and destruction of nature caused by war through landscape picture, based on their own observations or the materials provided from other sources. In this thesis study, six artists who lived in different periods were selected and some sample works of these artists which are prominent in the context of subject with their life stories have been examined from a formal and narrative perspective. These six artists lived in different periods and in different countries and depicted the effects of the social events of their period on nature based on the artistic understanding of their time as well. In the paintings, the destruction of nature is usually presented as a dominant subject, and sometimes the human figure is included in the composition. However, these figures have little effect in nature form. The highlight of these paintings, in which the destructive effects of the war are shown, is that traditional approaches landscape painting took from the historical course have been rendered in an innovative point of view in the context of a new subject. In addition, these paintings have become powerful tools for questioning the destruction of war on nature and community life. Practices made in the context of the subject have been tried to be structured in the light of the works of the artists studied in the research process of the thesis. In this process, the formal structure and the plastic language in the works of the reference artists have been used as important data in the technical construction of the application studies carried out about the thesis. That being said, as a result of the researches, it is believed that, the image must be created simultaneously with the form of the content coming from the life of the individual and the reality of the geography in which he lives, without being distanced from the plastic language (formal activity) of the artists, believing that the image must occur only as a reflection of the artist's life experiences.
