COMPARISON OF COOLING LOADS OF BUILDINGS IN HOT CLIMATES(CASE STUDY ON ANTALYA AND D YARBAKIR )Firuze lgin ERKMENArchitecture, M. S. ThesisBuilding envelope is under constant effect of outdoor temperature, humidity, wind andsolar radiation. These factors are evaluated separately in hot and cold weatherconditions. Solar radiation and temperature in hot or cold weather conditions areimportant for indoor thermal comfort. In hot climates, the hot period is longer than the cold period. Therefore, in hot zones, thedominant hot period conditions are critical for the cooling load. Recently, climaticchanges due to environmental pollution problems, such as heat effect and globalwarming, have given primary signifiance to energy consumption issues and cooling. This thesis aims to present climatic analysis of hot humid and hot dry zones and tocompare and evaluate two separate methods of calculating the cooling load on a samplebuilding. The city of Antalya for the hot humid and the city of Diyarbakır for hot dry climatictypes are chosen as sample cases.First chapter is the introductory chapter of the study. The second chapter analyzes theclimatic data of the city of Antalya and the city of Diyarbakır.Third chapter refers to descriptions of cooling load, its components and the twocalculation methods of TemperatureDifference Method (CLTD) and AdmittanceMethod.Fourth chapter comprises calculations based on Temperature Difference Method(CLTD) and Admittance Method on a sample building for the city of Antalya and forthe city of Diyarbakır. The calculation data is based on the day of design, 21 July. Theresults designate the sensible cooling load and the total cooling load. Both methods are evaluated individually and compared in the final chapter. Keywords: Cooling load, climatic analysis, thermal comfort, temperature differencemethod, admittance methodJURY:1.
