Energy efficiency for hot- humid climate based on openings and roof type, Adana case

Abstract (EN)

Traditional architecture offers appropriate design decisions in climatic conditions without the use of energy. The goal of this study is to compare two residential buildings with varied structural layers with the same heating and cooling area and thus contributing to improve energy performance in buildings. In this respect, in the reference housing structure which is taken as an example, increasing the window transparency, improving the glass type, adding shading elements to the windows in south direction; Besides, the effect of passive design techniques on energy efficiency by selecting green roof type instead of terrace roof was analyzed with eQUEST program using dynamic simulation approach on hourly basis. In this study, five different energy models have been developed and the differentiation between the energy performances of each has been tried to be revealed. According to the data obtained; - Energy consumption of the reference building is 40% less than a modern Adana house, - 6 % reduction in heating loads due to passive solar design in the reference building, - With the use of green roof, it is determined that the annual electricity and gas consumption is saved between 6 % and 55 % respectively. Consequently, it has been identified that passive solar energy design strategies and green roof type were applied to the openings on the reference building surface and total energy performance of building improved by 48%.
