Evaluation of the effect of resveratrol on wound healing in the second degree burn model in rats

Introduction: Burns are considered among the most serious physiological and psychological traumas that human beings can encounter in terms of both death and disability. Burns come with many problems within the framework of treatment and recovery. Thanks to the qualities it contains, resveratrol is among the drugs that Far East Asia has used for many years. The aim of this study was to examine the use of resveratrol in second-degree burn models in rats. Material and Method: 40 male Wistar-Albino rats aged 4-6 months with an initial weight of 300-450 g were divided into 4 different groups. The backs of the rats in all groups were shaved and a second-degree burn was created. Group 2 was dressed with Mupirocin (n =10). Group 3 was dressed with silver sulfodiazine (n =10). Group 4 was dressed with Resveratrol. (n =10). The dressings were renewed daily and the treatment was continued for 14 days. On day 15, biopsies were taken from all groups and rats were sacrificed. The samples taken were examined under light microscopy and electron microscopy. Results: As a result of the research, it was determined that epithelialization, collagenization and dermal collagen parameters were higher in the group to which resveratrol was applied. While all parameters were normal in the group treated with resveratrol, organelles were relatively normal in the dermal fibroblast parameter and increased regular in the collagen parameter in the mupirocin group; In the control group, the number of dermal fibroblast parameters was very high, and a significant increase in the cytoplasmic vacuolization dermal collagen parameter and macrophage and mast cells were determined near the capillary parameter. It was observed that dermal fibroblast, dermal collagen and dermal capillary parameters were higher in the groups treated with silver sulfodiazine and resveratrol. Conclusion: Limiting the inflammatory response in burn healing is important in the healing process. In our study, it was determined that resveratrol reduced inflammatory cytokines and that lymphocyte infiltration was at a lower level when resveratrol was used compared to other agents. This proved that the anti-inflammatory effect of resveratrol accelerated burn healing. In addition, the fact that collagenization was more organized in the resveratrol group and skin appendages became observable showed that resveratrol supported collagenization in the remodeling phase in addition to its anti-inflammatory activity.
