The effect of krill oil on new bone formation originated from rapid palatal expansion in rats

The aim of our study was to examine radiologically and histologically the anti-inflamatory effect of krill oil on bone remodeling after RPE on rats. In our study, 32 Wistar Albino rats were used. No intervention was made on the subjects in the control group. Krill oil extract was applied to the krill expansion group during expansion and retention period and to the krill retention group starting from 40 days before the expansion treatment until the end of the retention period. In radiological evaluation, in the treatment of maxillary expansion, krill oil supplementation was found to decrease the trabecular separation parameter comparing the only expansion group's and increase the trabecular number parameter comparing the control group's. Our investigations have shown that the RANKL primary antibody staining intensity was found to be lower in the krill oil supplemented group during RPE compared to the control and only expansion group. Also the OPG primary antibody staining intensty was higher in the krill oil supplemented groups compared to the control group. It was concluded that krill oil extract can reduce osteoclast activity and increased trabeculation in new bone tissue formed after rapid maxillary expansion.
