The effect of scratch-supported realistic mathematics education on academic success and sustainability in our money sub-learning topic

Abstract (EN)

According to the Realistic Mathematics Education approach, it is necessary to start the mathematization process with a real or perceived real problem status, which the students might encounter in their daily lives. It is thought that the students will interpret such an education better and in order to interpret mathematics, learning environments are needed. Various software can be utilized to create learning environments that support mathematics teaching. Within this framework, the aim of the current study is to identify the effect and the retention of the effect of Scratch-aided Realistic Mathematics Education Approach based activities carried out with Primary School sophomore students on their academic success in the Math class sub-learning field of "money", and to specify students' perceptions on the teaching method applied. The sample of the study consisted of 42 Primary School sophomore students from the 2020-2021 academic year, 21 experiment group students, and 21 control group students in Gümüşhane. In the study, easily accessible case sampling and criterion sampling methods, which are types of purposive sampling, were used. Explanatory-Sequential Design, a type of Mixed-Method Design in which both qualitative and quantitative research methods are combined, was used in the research. In the quantitative phase of the study, using pretest-posttest and retention test in a quasi-experimental control group design, the success levels of the experiment group and the control group in the sub-learning field of "money" were compared. The Data Gathering Instrument of "Money Academic Success Test" was applied to all of the students, whereas the students in the experiment group were interviewed about the "Semi-Structured Interview Form" Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests were used in the analysis of quantitative data. In the analysis of qualitative data, the content analysis method was preferred. As a result of the research, it was concluded that the Scratch-aided Realistic Mathematics Education applied to the experimental group enhances academic success and learning retention while also affecting the student perceptions of the class in a positive way.
