Globalization dynamics of urban economies

With the globalization, the world economy has undergone a radical change and transformation process, and the cities which are the center of the change have taken their share from this period. As a result of globalization, the fall back of the nation-state, the excessive accumulation of capital and the emergence of the information society paved the way for the transformation of cities. Thus, cities emerged that are based on competition and determining the use of space according to market rules. This transformation caused cities to look from the perspective of globalization and the concept of "global city" was put forward. Accordingly, the first feature of global cities which are the center of international trade and finance; they became the control point of the world economic order. The second feature is that they are critical production points of the world's leading finance and service sector. The third feature is that the leading industries in the market have become innovative production spaces, and the fourth is that new products are transformed into market places. These four functions give cities the power to control a wide range of resources, and they become key actors in economic, political and sociocultural terms. What makes these cities different is their ability to activate their functions in a network system. The characteristics of the cities within this network system, which are subject to a hierarchical ranking, such as their economic power, their innovative features, their transnational political roles, their share in international circulation of information, human capital potential, cultural development level and quality of life, have been decisive in their position in the hierarchical network. This study is based on the assumption of the similarity of globalization dynamics of cities connected by global city networks. In this context, only 16 variables were analyzed based on the assumption that the data of the 2015-2018 period and the first 40 cities in the hierarchical rankings work within a network of global city dynamics and therefore converge over time. Six of these variables reflect cities in terms of economic, two innovations, three culturales, two livables, one environmental and two accessibles. According to the results, the economic, R&D and cultural characteristics of global cities have similarities in these cities. However, global cities are not similar in terms of livability, accessibility and environmental features. The findings obtained are important for determining the global geographical position of the cities in the hierarchical order and for the regulation of the competitiveness and potential planning process accordingly.
