Investigation of the use of electric bus in terms of energy efficiency and environmental pollution in urban transportation: Izmir case study

In this study, a general evaluation is given about the electric drive systems which are gaining importance in public transportation vehicles. These systems represent an important alternative to fossil fuel systems in terms of energy efficiency and environment. Main purpose of this study is to present and discuss the current state of electric drive system vehicles globally and particularly in Turkey, focusing İzmir's situation as an example. In this context, initially, detailed information about current battery technology and different models of electric vehicles given followed by the comparison of energy efficiency and envoiremental aspects of current diesel engined busses used by ESHOT with electric drive system busses used both globally and in İzmir particularly. Proposals considering the focal points of planning investments in this matter also added.
