Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to determine the number sense levels of eighth grade students on the subject of square root expressions and to examine the relationship between number sense levels, mathematics achievement and self-efficacy beliefs based on number sense. The research, using the relational scanning model, was conducted with 115 eighth grade students in the town of Marmaris in Muğla province in the 2021-2022 Academic Year. Data collection tools in research; Achievement Test based on Square Root Expressions developed by the researcher, Number Sense Scale based on Square Root Expressions developed by Soyuk (2018), and Self-Efficacy Scale based on Number Sense developed by Alkaş Ulusoy (2017). Descriptive statistics and frequency analysis were used for number sense levels based on square root expressions and success levels based on square root expressions. Pearson correlation and simple linear regression were used to look at the relationship between number sense levels based on square root expressions, achievements based on square root expressions, and self-efficacy beliefs based on number sense. As a result of the research; Eighth grade students' number sense levels based on square root expressions were found quite low. It was determined that the students exhibited a rule-based approach in their solutions. Among the number sense components, the component "knowing the processing effect and meaning of the operations performed" has the lowest mean; The component "referencing a point in the measurement process" was the component with the highest average. Achievement levels based on square root expressions are moderate. Eighth grade students' self-efficacy based on number sense was found quite high. A moderately significant positive correlation was found between the level of sense of number based on square root expressions and the level of success for expressions with square roots.
