Reflection of geometric motifs in Seljuk Empire period on today's ceramics and new three dimensional tile designs

In Islamic art, Anatolian Seljuk Empire experienced undoubtedly the most magnificent and efficient period between 11th and 13th centuries in terms of architectural decoration. This study addresses to geometrical motifs that were one of the most used design elements of architectural decoration in that period. Having a wide inventory, geometrical motifs are rich in terms of meaning, technique and variety. Motifs thoroughly reflecting eternity and symmetry concept have been discussed in many studies. Although there is no insufficiency regarding resources or research, today's contemporary ceramics does not have enough efficient resources or applications with regards to the reflection of geometrical motifs. This study aims to bring a different dimension and design understanding to geometrical motifs from a contemporary point of view by using the data in the right manner. By analyzing and reasoning out the inventory in the right manner, a dimensioning study was carried out on geometrical motifs. Drawing methods used for geometrical motifs were majorly analyzed and understood, and a different interpretation was concluded on existing patterns. The ultimate goal of this study is to make motifs 3-dimensional relief tiles rather than 2-dimensional ones and bring such tile compositions to today's contemporary places. Production of ceramics has been well developed in the industry when today's conditions are concerned. Thanks to these developments, apart from plain tiles, relief wall ceramics can be seen in collections as well. At this point, issues come up in terms of using these motifs in the right manner in collections created by companies or special designers by being inspired by traditional motifs. Starting from these issues, new 3-dimensional tiles were designed and a collection was created in the right manner with a different, innovative design and production understanding. Chiaroscuro generated by dimensioning geometrical motifs increases the power and visual effect of design. This study ultimately aims to bring the traces of our past culture to today's contemporary places and hand down historical background to next generations in the right way.
