Transmisson of schemas and core emotional needs

Data were collected from 210 families (triads) (mother-father-child) with the Young Schema Scale Questionnaire Form 3 and Young Parenting Questionnaire in order to investigate intergenerational unmet basic emotional needs and schema domains. Schema domains and need domains were calculated based on the framework presented by Bach et al. (2017). The model is based on the assumptions that the values that parents remember about their own parents affect the schema domains, that their schemas affect the parenting values, that the parenting values affect the schema values of the child participants, that the parenting values are related to each other, that the schema domains of the parents are related to each other. The constructed models were analyzed with IBM SPSS AMOS 21 and Structural Equation Modeling for maximum likelihood estimation. As a result of the analyses, approximately 81% of the pathways were significant, and findings supporting the transmission of basic emotional needs and schema domains between generations were obtained. The results show that in both generations, the emotional needs of individuals that are not met as a result of their perceived parental attitudes predict their schemas, and the schemas of the parents predict the parenting attitudes perceived by their children. The fact that the parenting values are related and the schema domains of the parents are related are the findings supporting schema chemistry. The findings are discussed within the framework of the Schema Therapy literature, emphasizing the importance of data interdependence.
