Şemseddin Sami, Kamus-ı Arabi

Having played an essential role in the modernization of Turkish lexicography, Şemseddin Sami presented both his reformist understanding and his ideas in this field in various articles he wrote theoretically and applied them in dictionaries he prepared. Dictionaries such as Kamus-ı Fransevî, Kamus-ı Arabî, and Kamus-ı Türkî, are among the essential products of Şemseddin Sami's innovative understanding in the field of lexicologist. Reflections of Şemseddin Sami's creative agreement are not only seen in Turkish to Turkish monolingual dictionaries but also in Arabic to Turkish bilingual dictionaries. He stated that there should be systematic and accessibility features in these dictionaries and applied this understanding in Kamus-ı Arabî. Kamus-ı Arabî, as in Kamus-ı Türkî, is a turning point in Arabic-Turkish lexicography studies with the innovations it brings in this field. The system implemented in this dictionary, which Şemseddin Sami has described as the modern method, largely complies with the criteria of contemporary lexicology. In this respect, although Kamus-ı Arabî is not complete, it can be accepted as the first Arabic-Turkish dictionary written with a modern lexicography approach. In this study, we discussed the opinions of Şemseddin Sami about lexicography. And we evaluated Kamus-ı Arabî in terms of lexicography. We transferred to the Latin alphabet. We prepared An alphabetically ordered index to cover all the items of the dictionary.
