Abstract (EN)

Murat GÜLDÜZ, In Patients with Nasal Septum Deviation who has Multifrequency Tympanometry, Başkent University, Institue of Health Sciences M. Sc. Thesis in Audiology and Speech – Voice Disorders, 2016 In the literature, the performance of conventional tympanometry on the characteristics of middle ear is still discussing. On the conventional tympanometry 226Hz prop tone is used often. Multifrequency tympanometry is an advantageous test method which can assess the resistance and permeability of the middle ear in a wide frequency internal by providing the analysis of the tympanograms which are obtained with different probe tones between 226 Hz and 2000 Hz. One of the important parameters of multifrequency tympanometry is the resonant frequency. Under the presence of some specific pathologies; resonant frequency value is normal and gets lower or higher values when compared to the healthy ears. Although it is an advantageous test, it is a fact known by several investigators that multifrequency tympanometry has not become widespread in clinical applications in our country as the world. The purpose of this paper is investigating the (evidences of) how the deviated nasal septum ither indirectly affecting or not affecting to the functions/functionalities of the middle ear by using multifrequency tympanometry method. Our study is based on the fındıngs of multifrequency and tympopnometry of septum deviation and its impact on middle ear due to Eustacian Tube. For this reason, Totaly 58 volunteered which are 29 volunteered participant who has septum deviation and 29 volunteered participant who has no septum deviation, ages between 18-40, who has no reported hearing loss and have normal otoscopy findings at Başkent University ENT Department were involved in our study. After otoscopic examination, participants immitansmetric measurements were recorded. Both ears of the partipants (58 ears) were evaluated. RF values taken from both ears of all the participants. In patients with deviation on right side; resonance frequency averages for the left ear as 727,78±220,95 Hz, for the right ear as 738,89±252,21 Hz and in patients with deviation on left side; resonance frequency averages for the right ear as 795,00±322,77 Hz, for the left ear as 830,00±290,82 Hz and for control group, resonance frequency averages for the left ear as 831,03±850,00Hz for the right ear as 884,48±900,00 were found. There was no statistically significant relationship between deviation side and RFs, but significantly relationship between RF values of deviation patients and normative values of our clinic. These datas will be held in the future for more comprehensive studies. Key Words: Resonance frequency, multifrequency tympanometry, eustachi tube.
