Use of ceramic material in ornament design

In the project report titled "Use of Ceramic Material in Ornament Design", firstly, the reflection of the cultural structures, aesthetic understanding and technical skills of ancient societies and civilizations to ornament design are investigated. While ornaments made of animal teeth and bones are common in Paleolithic Period, before men live in settlements, the first examples of ornaments made by shaping metals are seen in the Neolithic Period, when agriculture and mining have begun and developed. The variety of materials and techniques used in ornaments from ancient Mesopotampia and Egypt witness the greatness of these civilizations. In the second chapter of the project report, historical and current examples of the use of ceramic material in ornament design are given. Although there are not many such examples in history, the ceramic ornaments from ancient Egypt form a rich collection. Besides the Egypt Civilization, which has a special place in the history of ceramic ornaments, ceramics was used in ornaments in Pacific Nicaragua as well in a very different way than the one in Egypt. While ceramics was combined with glass, jewels, porcelain and metals with various techniques by Egyptians, the use of ceramics in ornament design by the communities in Pacific Nicaragua is much more primitive. In 1950's with the influence of Art Nouveau movement that had begun in the previous century, materials used in ornament design has diversified, and ceramics has begun to be used in ornaments frequently. In the third and the last chapter, several ornament works that are made of ceramic materials are presented. In these works that are made using various ceramic materials and techniques, the diversity and the flexibility that the use of ceramic materials provide in ornament design are emphasized.
